Got That Walled Out Feeling?
Seems like a lot of residents are putting up walls. Not sure if they are being walled in or I am being walled out.
Personally, if someone feels they have to have a wall, I would much rather see a low wall set back from the property line with some nice landscaping. I like views, particulary landscapes. If security is perceived to be a problem a "see through" type fence would fit a lot better in the neighborhood. Nice example of this on Chippawa.
Below are four new walls that have sprung up recently. I think all of these are "foam walls" - a thick foam board is set between metal posts and the surface is given a texture, similar to stucco, then painted. One wonders how these will hold up when high winds start blowing objects around.
Take a look at this site for an innovative way to comment on walls and gated communities. It will make you chuckle.

The wonderful thing about this neighborhood (I am a 33-year resident) has been its open, expansive feeling. I can look out of my window at four yards...no walls. No one ever physically intrudes on each other's property, but we visually share a great, green view. That is neighborhood!!
Even the large old estates on the bay,in most cases, have low walls and a sense of belonging to the neighborhood.
Not only do I find the walls that are springing up all over IBSSA a visual blight, I wonder if the owners realize that walls, rather than protecting them, are cover for any intruder who gets inside them. The police will tell you, it is all of our "eyes on the street" that help prevent crime in our neighborhood.
Perhaps those who are building walls might stop to think how they will feel if every single one of us builds a 6-foot wall around our property. I hope that in five years our neighborhood doesn't look like Siesta Key...a collection of walled enclaves.
I think a lot of neighbors share your view. I certainly do.
A neighborhood friendly home and yard does not include a 6' wall all around the property.
Ditto: Your sense of protection is an illusion. I miss being able to look across back yards from my kitchen sink. Nothing going on, just space, greenery, and a breeze. Besides, I think some of those ersatz stucco walls look like they have mumps.
